Chinese, Japan Ship Collision – Video Now Up
At the start of September, a news story came out about a Chinese fishing vessel colliding with a couple of Japanese coast guard vessels near the Senkaku chain of islands between Japan and China. These are a disputed chain of islands, with China also laying a strong claim to them (in China they go by the name of the Diaoyu Islands). I read about this story initially and my usual scepticism quickly came to the fore. Just like the stories with the Japanese whaling fleet and Sea Shepherd, you are never sure what to believe and it’s very possible that in these kind of encounters it’s size of one and half a dozen of the other. So I didn’t really give the story much thought.
But then my buddy Chris posted up a couple of videos that have been “leaked” onto the net, and which were made by Japanese Coast Guard officials during the encounter. Unfortunately neither my Japanese nor my Chinese is good enough to work out what is being said by both parties, but they do say that pictures speak louder than words. If that’s the case then these video clips should be shouting out loud and clear to you. Seems pretty clear-cut that the Chinese vessel turned into the Japanese vessel at least once, even if any other rules of shipping were not being applied by the Coast Guard (and I don’t know if that’s the case). Or am I just getting too soft on Japan in my old age?! Let me know what you think about this one.
